Dear Editor,
I am very grateful for Michael Reeves thoughtful article on evangelical arrogance in the June issue of en.
I have been reading William Dalrymple’s depressing account of how evangelical arrogance was a significant contributory factor in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, and the many tens of thousands who died as a result. Reeves argues that as we learn to see the glory of God we are humbled, quoting John 12:32 – ‘He is lifted up’. The great reversal of Christianity is that Christ is glorified and enthroned on the cross. Our vision of God’s greatness is in the figure of a crucified Messiah, ‘who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God’ (Phil. 2:6). If we are what we worship, then we should note that we worship Christ who calls us to take up our crosses and follow Him.
