Keeping Sunday special

Dear Editor,

I have followed with interest the Christian media coverage of the story of Eric Liddell – e.g. Graham Daniel’s article in the August issue of your paper as well as his enthusiastic lecture at Keswick, BBC Songs of Praise, BBC4 Sunday Worship as well as extensive comment on Chariots of Fire. It seems that all are agreed in their admiration of this ‘man of Christian principle’.

But I am unaware of any appreciation or even discussion of the particular ‘principle’ he was highlighting – his recognition of the Lord’s Day. Even Luke Randall’s feature article on Liddell in the July issue of en, while identifying things we learn from him, seemed to avoid this issue. I wonder what is our attitude to be to the increasing number of big sporting events being held on Sundays? What guidance is being given and/or practised in our churches? Are we happy so long as there is no conflict with our time of worship or is it a case of ‘Then there were nine’?
