In response to Dave Burke in his comment piece in the May issue: I doubt that Vincent McAviney of LBC radio merely, unprompted, ‘spotted’ Tim Farron’s evangelicalism (hardly a secret) and after some ‘digging’ dreamt up the idea of asking him, 11 times in four minutes, for a live exegesis of the book of Leviticus, in his capacity as a political leader. The Liberal Democrat hierarchy hated Tim for refusing to submit to all the demands of Coalition with the Conservatives; Vince Cable dismissed Tim’s claim to be a liberal, insisting instead that he had a secret theocratic agenda. The ex-ministers needed Tim to do well enough to get them returned to the Commons, but badly enough to ensure the Party would revert to establishment politics. That is what they got – Leviticus was just a handy weapon.
