Dear Editor,
Permit me to comment on one thing in my friend Adrian’s letter of last month: Church of England bishops (with their accommodation and expenses) are paid out of the historic assets of the Church of England (invested to generate income) and not from Parish Ministry Costs. So bishops who do not adhere to the faith are a disgrace and a danger, but no money raised in local churches pays for them. However, the parish money – in addition to the stipend, NI contributions, housing and pension of the clergyman – does help to pay for archdeacons and staff at Church House in each Diocese. Just wanted to tidy that up.
Yours sincerely,
