Dear Sir,
Andrew Hambler (en March 2019 p.19) argues that Barnabas Fund’s petition for a new law to guarantee religious liberty was unnecessary. In his view, freedom of religion in the UK is already fully protected by Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Equality Act.
Article 9 of the ECHR is based on Article 18 of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR, 1948): ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.’
