Dear readers,
May I beg your help, please. I am currently researching the life and works of Edith Cherry (Edith Adeline Gilling Cherry – born 9 February 1872, died 29 August 1897, aged 25). Through the kindness of the National Library of Scotland I have been able to study the two books of her works. However, I would like to know more about her background in Plymouth, her relatives, her church and possibly her school.
In particular I am keen to have sight of any artefacts that friends may have tucked away. Edith is famed not only for her poetry (141 hymns, songs and poems by my last count) but also for her artistic talent. Quote: ‘She printed texts by hand on porcelain or scroll, and decorated with sprays of ivy or fern sprays — ‘painted for Jesus’ — ‘I can’t preach but I can print a text, and that will do more work for the Lord than any sermon, for he has said “My word shall not return unto me void’’ ’. So a special blessing was asked on each text, before it was sent out as a silent messenger from God.
