Prayer for the floods

Dear Editor,

Please pray for us in Cumbria that victims of the recent floods will call on the Lord in their misery. Arguably, in Cumbria more than any other county, we have the greatest evidence for God’s glory in creation. Many folk are bitter and hearts hardened because of the recent devastation. But our sovereign Lord can pour out his Holy Spirit and glorify his name in the far flung north.

Some authorities had informed us that we would be safe for 100 years with the newly erected flood defences! The rescue teams have been magnificent in Cockermouth, sacrificial, very industrious, kind and reassuring. One elderly couple living near the confluence of the rivers Cocker and Derwent have been flooded out four times in ten years. Sadly they could not afford the insurers excess of £2,500. However, an anonymous Liverpool businessman has very generously paid it for them. He remarked: ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’
