Dear Sir,

I was interested and a little saddened by the difficulties Heather Watkins (Work in Progress, November en) has experienced in her work for the NHS in sharing her faith.

Fortunately, I did not experience this in my 45 years with the NHS and have at their request prayed with patients as well as suggesting fellowships which they might want to attend. When I began work, I think virtually every hospital in the land had a weekly Christian Fellowship, active in witnessing to colleagues. I remember nurses praying before going on duty. It is often worth reminding those in the professions and others that hospitals, schools and a welfare system were pioneered in the first instance in this country by godly men and women, driven by the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
