IVP / SPCK

Dear en,

Like many, I was very grieved at the sudden and somewhat shocking news that IVP had become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPCK. I write now only to reassure en read-ers on a question raised by your editorial comment in the November news piece.

You express concern about IVP’s future editorial policy, as its doctrinal basis was written ‘many decades ago’ and ‘does not address any of the politically correct ‘equality’ issues’. The Scripture clause (c) reads: ‘The Bible, as originally given, is the inspired and infallible Word of God. It is the supreme authority in all matters of belief and behaviour.’ While a reference to public life could perhaps be added (given that this reads as if it refers to the individual), any updating to specify issues of the day would surely weaken it. Such matters of application are better dealt with in an exposition, but not in the basis of faith itself.
