France: Calvin’s 40th

Guests on the seminary campus in Aix-en-Provence

Over 300 guests from as far afield as Indonesia, Brazil and the USA attended the 40th anniversary of the John Calvin Seminary in Aix-en-Provence early in September.

During this event, marked by public lectures with guest speaker Gerald Bray from Cambridge and a thanksgiving service at which Etienne Lhermenault, president of the National Council of French Evangelicals (CNEF) preached, the renovated classroom and library facility was dedicated. The cost of this extensive project has already been met by gifts from around the world. During the weekend representatives from the Reformed seminary at Kampen in Holland announced a partnership with Aix.

The seminary is based on the French confession of faith (La Rochelle) and is committed to maintaining the Reformed faith in France. Over 100 students, representing a broad spectrum of French-speaking evangelical churches, are presently enrolled – around half of them in distance learning programmes. 80% of graduating students enter the pastoral ministry. The seminary has six full-time teachers, five of whom are former students.
