The joys of working in Morning Star children’s centre in Welkom are many, and involve little stories such as these.
Firstly, nine-year-old Siyanda who began bringing ‘lost’ milk teeth in exchange for small change has now resorted to bringing small stones because his teeth are just not dropping out fast enough! Secondly, putting joy back into the heart of Israel’s mum, Betty, when we were able to secure transport and accommodation for her close to the Bloemfontein hospital where her six-year-old son was taken by ambulance. This happened after she was refused passage on the same ambulance and was separated from her little boy as he travelled for major surgery.
Dismissed
Sadly, two of our staff have had to be dismissed as they were caught stealing. Since the installation of our CCTV cameras six months back an immediate decline in the usage of toilet paper was noted, as was our teabag consumption! And, surprisingly, we’re also buying far less bread and milk on a daily basis as well. In fact, we’re saving in the region of R3,000.00 ($300) on our grocery purchases each month!
