Lewisham looks forward

Main: Sivan Kovil, a Hindu Temple, near the Baptist Church. Inset: new pastor Steve Whitton

Lewisham is a densely populated, multicultural melting pot in SE London.

The middle of town has been heavily redeveloped with high-rise apartments, looking down onto the rolling streets of suburbia. In one of those older streets is College Park Baptist Church, a church with a long history that is entering a new chapter.

On 2 July Steve Whitton was inducted as the new pastor. Born in nearby Camberwell, Steve is a true Londoner (his brother Tim is pastor at East Street Baptist Church, Walworth) with a heart for reaching out into Lewisham. Having worked as a primary school teacher, Steve was recruited as a school chaplain at Archbishop Tennyson’s School, overlooking the Oval cricket ground, a school that was facing significant challenges at the time. For the past four years he has been a trainee pastor at Kenton Evangelical Church in Harrow, while completing the Cornhill Training Course.
