An experienced A&E doctor has appealed a ruling that Christian Biblical beliefs on gender are not worthy of respect in a democratic society and are ‘incompatible with human dignity’.
Dr David Mackereth, 58, was sacked in 2018 from his role as a medical assessor for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) after refusing to identify clients by their chosen gender instead of their biological sex.
He had argued that the DWP’s policy of compelling staff to use ‘transgender pronouns’ breached equality laws. He also argued the DWP had breached his right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
In 2019, the Employment Tribunal rejected his employment claim, reducing his views to merely ‘opinion’.
Dr Mackereth took his appeal to London’s Employment Appeal Tribunal, backed by the Christian Legal Centre. The ruling has yet to be handed down.
A helpful challenge – but I don’t recognise those views
