England rugby union star Billy Vunipola refused, in July, to go back on his view that sex should be reserved for opposite-sex marriage.

Vunipola was attacked for liking an Instagram post by Israel Folau, an Australian rugby player, who paraphrased a Bible verse calling on ‘drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars’ and others to repent. Vunipola has not taken down the original social media post supporting Folau and says he will continue to use social media as a ‘positive tool’.

Distraction

He pledged not to comment further on such matters so as not ‘to become a distrac-tion’ to England’s World Cup campaign. He noted that he would answer more questions if it just affected him: ‘But it doesn’t just affect me. It affects players and coaching staff because they will be asked their opinions on it. I don’t want to put them under the cosh. It is firmly what I put out there and it is firmly on me.’
