Bala: emphasising the experience of Christ

Jonathan Thomas

The Bala Minister’s Conference held in early June is attractive due to its Welshness and its emphasis on Experience.

As is often the case with influential Christian movements of the 20th century, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones has a lot to do with the significance of it. He was heavily involved in the conference up until his death.

One could draw a Venn diagram of all the Christian conferences that are available to attend in the UK, and each has its own particular attraction. The appeal of Bala comes down to its Welshness and its emphasis on Experience. The Welshness manifests itself in those who attend, with almost every single one ministering in Wales or having a Welsh connection. The Experience element is played out in what is often the emphasis of the messages: sensitivity to the presence of Christ is high on the agenda. The other Experience element is found in the generous allotted time for prayer, much of which includes earnest desire for this ‘known and felt’ Christ, and for revival.
