St. Helen’s Church in Bishopsgate in the City of London, one of the largest conservative evangelical Anglican churches in the UK, has said that it will feel forced to break from the Church of England if the next Bishop of London has liberal views on sexuality.
The announcement of the next Bishop, to replace Lord Chartres who retired recently, is expected soon.
According to the report in The Times on Wednesday 13 December, the rector of St Helen’s, Rev. William Taylor, has said that his first question to the new bishop will be to ask him or her to ‘declare as sin what God calls sin’. It goes on to report him as saying in a recent sermon that if the bishop does not condemn homosexual relationships as sinful, then some form of break will be ‘unavoidable’ and that they will need to wait to see what the new bishop’s views are.
