Are you looking for something that you can whip out of a drawer or handbag that will occupy a child?
I was recently given a copy of a large-format activity book called Joseph Activities (ISBN 978 1 915 705 907). I really like this book as there are a variety of different activities from straightforward colouring-in, to spot the difference and mazes, as well as some more unusual puzzles that involve basic arithmetic and copying.
My favourite was the ‘Where’s Wally’ style of puzzle where there is a list of small objects to find in the picture. Along with the answers, the last page has a summary of the story of Joseph.
What I really appreciate about this book is that throughout all the 20 pages the Bible references are given so that the child can look up the story in Scripture for themselves.
I’ve just come across a companion activity book to the storybook The Garden, The Curtain, and the Cross (ISBN 978 1 784 981 754). I also have a copy on my desk of the activity book to accompany The God Contest (ISBN 978 1 784 987 015). What sets this book apart is that there is more of a story in it. The puzzles are for a slightly younger child. Although these are companion books you could quite easily purchase the activity book on its own.
If it’s something handbag sized you need then there is a whole range of books under the Christian Focus imprint Bible Art. These are mostly colouring-in books but there are some dot-to-dot books too. One of my favourite sets is Colour the Bible – there is a verse from each book of Scripture, with a picture for children to colour in. This is the ISBN number for the Matthew-Mark volume: 978 1 857 927 641. The Colour and Learn set introduces some of the attributes of God such as God Never Changes – ISBN 978 1 857 926 354.
