Relationships is part of a series on discipleship, particularly for unchurched people. It is written in a style that is clear and easy to read, teaching Biblical truth faithfully.
The narrative builds on the truth that all relationships are broken in some way, not least with God. In the first chapter, such plain speaking promptly illustrates that there is to be little mincing of the truth. For someone who is converted and wants to grow, this is refreshingly honest without being hopeless: the gospel means we are reconciled with God, and now have a lifelong call to grow in love for Him and one another. To show this, Dickens uses a character, ‘Biddy’, whose life is gritty. This works very well, enhancing and applying the pastoral challenges.
