Meet The Puritans

THE GLORY OF GRACE
An introduction to the Puritans
in their own words
By Lewis Allen & Tim Chester
Banner of Truth. 167 pages. £7.00
ISBN 978 1 848 718 340

It has been a pleasure to read this book. I like the way the editors have selected, edited and sometimes translated the various passages which bring pastoral care and biblical teaching into the present, as God’s word and wisdom for all time.

Here we have the mighty John Owen (on communion with God), the incomparable Richard Baxter (on everyday discipleship), William Bridge as pastoral and precious as ever (read his book A Lifting up for the Downcast, published by Banner of Truth, if you never read another); we also have Burroughs on contentment, Bunyan on faith, and poetry from Ann Bradstreet. The short biographies are good: Thomas Goodwin is given due recognition, but they could have been kinder to Baxter, the greatest evangelist of them all.
