Something wonderful happened between 27 May and 4 June 1940.
The British and French armies had been overwhelmed by the Nazi war machine. While expecting to be able to evacuate perhaps 30 – 40,000 troops from France, in fact some 338,000 were eventually rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk.
