DOUGLAS HIGGINS
Autobiography of a Yorkshire Christian
Banner of Truth. 87 pages. £6.39

It would be easy to overlook this book on account of its diminutive size and number of pages. But that would be a mistake. It is a spiritually enriching testimony of an ordinary man of God who loved the theology that puts God at the centre of our lives and gives him the glory for our salvation from first to last.
Brought up in Sheffield in the early part of the last century, Douglas became a follower of Christ through the youth work of a local Brethren assembly and soon realised that the Bible was a treasure store of untold blessing and wisdom. He went on to study art until called to join the RAF at the start of World War II. Throughout those tumultuous years he was able to maintain a strong Christian witness despite the harshness of the barrack room and the specific opposition of other men. On leaving the forces he qualified as a teacher specialising in art and became an accomplished painter in his own right.
