‘CHM’, as he was known, was born in Drumgoff, West Wicklow, Ireland, in 1820 and died in 1896 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
He was converted, in his teens, through the influence of his sister who urged him to read the writings of J.N. Darby. Mackintosh became ‘the journalist of the Brethren Movement … popularising Darby’s teaching’, including his dispensationalism, through itinerant preaching and writing. He was a prolific author of tracts and books, including his six volumes of notes on the first five books of the Bible, besides editing a magazine, Things Old and New, from 1858-1878. He married an Irish lady, Catherine Emma, and fathered six sons. The chapter on controversies among the Brethren leaders and between the assemblies is sad reading. The eight chapters of biography are followed by five Appendices, a bibliography and an index.
