THE GOODNIGHT BOOK
By Richard Bewes
Christian Focus. 127 pages. £6.99
ISBN 978-1-84550-465-6

In The Goodnight Book, Richard Bewes’s main aim is to prepare the mind to gain a restful night’s sleep. A classical devotional style is adopted. Bewes has selected a range of Old and New Testament Bible verses placed at the top of each page, then a short explanation of the text, finishing with a quote from a well-known theologian / writer / politician / hymn writer. These quotes succinctly summarise what has been written before. With a daily dose of The Goodnight Book you can set your mind on things above.

It is easy to read and in less than five minutes you can benefit from one of these little gems. Occasionally a theme is followed over successive days, such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Beatitudes and the I Am’s of Jesus, which is helpful. He is good at putting the selected text into context and sometimes uses alliteration to expound the verse. The book also informs the reader about famous historical events in the lives of people, offers remedies for a good night’s sleep and uses everyday illustrations that can deepen the understanding of theological truth.
