FOUNTAINS IN THE DUST
Snapshots from the streets of South America
By Adrian & Bridget Plass and Angela Murray. Authentic. 137 pages. £9.99
ISBN 978-1-85078-817-1

Fountains in the Dust is a Latin American adventure in a book. Tracking the highs and lows of the journey which the authors made through Peru and Bolivia, this book takes you to some of the world’s most forgotten locations. From prisons and parks to churches and projects, our travellers get right to the heart of some of the places where the charity Toybox currently works. Filled with photographs, poems and stories, and brought together by the typcial Plass mix of humour and hard-hitting truth, this is an unforgettable story of hope for the street children of Latin America.’

This description from the blurb encapsulates well the content of the book. The honesty of the writers as they share their mixed emotions and motives brings a realism and challenge. Buying this attractively produced book as a gift (perhaps for someone going on a gap year?) would increase awareness of the work of Toybox, as well as giving a flavour of how humbling it is to leave, even briefly, the comfort zone of the rich West.
