SUCH A GREAT SALVATION
The collected essays of Alan Stibbs
Ed. Andrew Atherstone. Mentor. 316 pages. £11.99
ISBN 978-1-84550-423-6

Profound gratitude to Christian Focus Publications, and to the editor Andrew Atherstone, for this collection of the writings of Alan Stibbs, one-time missionary in China and for many years vice-principal of Oak Hill College (1937-1971). As a biblical expositor he was quite exceptional.

I recall often asking for his help, so generously and happily given, in the work of training sessions and conferences for ordination candidates, since few in those days could reveal the riches of Scripture as he did, and thus inspire confidence in a Bible teaching ministry. No less a judge than Dr. Jim Packer writes of these essays that ‘all are outstanding — and some have landmark status’. As one example of the latter, ‘The Meaning of the Word “Blood” in Scripture’ was and is a very necessary corrective after Westcott had deceived the whole world.
