THE BANNER OF TRUTH MAGAZINE, issues 1-16
Edited by Iain Murray
Banner of Truth. 516 pages
ISBN 0 85151 919 9

|The Banner of Truth Magazine| was started by Iain Murray, then a young 24-year-old, and the Rev. Sidney Norton of St. John’s, Summertown, Oxford, in September 1955.

The vision of the magazine was to point evangelicals back to a God-centred view of the gospel. This volume comprises the first 16 issues of the magazine through to August 1959 and is composed largely of articles from the Puritans and great Reformed preachers of the past. By 1958 the publishing house Banner of Truth Trust had been formed.

Things have changed a lot in evangelicalism since the 1950s. But there can be no doubt that the Banner Magazine has been a great catalyst for good in helping a new generation to rediscover the doctrines of grace. Though there are rough edges and acknowledged ‘blemishes’ in some of the articles which the ‘young Turk’ of an editor chose 50 years ago, it all makes for an ongoing and worthwhile challenge from many great men whose holiness and love for Christ we in our day have not even begun to emulate.
