This book is a brief, but well-written introduction to the 'Prince of Preachers' - Charles Haddon Spurgeon. It also provides information for those who are interested in visiting places associated with him.
The author shows the influence of Spurgeon's Huguenot background before describing his early years. The story of his conversion, his early experiences as a preacher and his call to pastor Waterbeach Baptist church at just 17 years of age makes fascinating reading. However, London beckoned, and the book shows the impact of his Christ-centred preaching on the capital and indeed on the world! Here was a man who, as well as being a caring pastor, founded a Bible college, supported evangelists, planted churches, built orphanages and almshouses, published a hymnbook and a magazine and much more. But Spurgeon faced difficulties and disappointments too - not least in the Downgrade controversy. The final chapter tells of his failing health and death at the relatively young age of 57. But Spurgeon's influence remained and having travelled with Spurgeon through the book it is not surprising to find that three years after his death 60 million copies of his weekly sermons were still being sold!
