The Banner of Truth has once more put us in their debt by reprinting this excellent exegetical commentary. After a 36-page introduction, the Greek text of each of the Epistles is set out on the left hand pages with the author's translation on the opposite pages.
Then the commentary follows, verse by verse and even phrase by phrase. Although the commentary is on the Greek text, the translation is always given so that a person with no Greek suffers little inconvenience. The style is strictly exegetical, application being left to the reader, which means that this work is ideal for preachers who should be able to make their own application. Difficulties are faced squarely, and there is occasional reference to textual variations. There are three Appendices offering further comment on knotty points, such as the phrase, 'husband of one wife', and slavery in the New Testament. First printed in 1874 it received the commendation of C.H. Spurgeon who remarked: 'What with a good translation, full defence of the apostolic authority of the Epistles, fruitful comments, and profitable dissertations, this volume is about as complete a guide to the smaller epistles as one could desire.' Serious readers and ministers will find it invaluable. If the preacher has this volume and a good modern commentary then perhaps no other will be necessary. Warmly recommended.
