Advances in genetic research are moving at a pace beyond what was anticipated by scientists as recently as the late 1990s. Issues which increasingly hit the headlines are human cloning, designer babies and the use of stem cells from human embryos.

The ethical implications for stem cell applications are enormous. Few 'ordinary' Christians seem familiar with the issues raised and how the Bible and the Christian worldview addresses this wide range of practical, ethical situations. Many of us, out of our depth with these issues, are tempted to leave the experts to deal with all this. While we do so, most people in society embrace an exclusively pragmatic stance rooted in a purely human worldview and as persuasively conveyed by the media.
