GREAT JOY
By J.I. Packer
Kingsway. 151 pages.
ISBN 0 85476 838 6

This book is a selection of 31 daily readings from the writings of J.I. Packer.

The theme is Christian joy, but you have to wait for 22 days for this to arrive! Five days on holiness, seven about repentance and nine on suffering teach us that Christian joy is not to be worked up in isolation, but worked out in the whole context of Christian experience. If, as Isaac Watts sang: 'The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets', I would rate these devotional readings as toffees to be chewed rather than Turkish Delight that needs no effort!
