This is another very readable, practical volume which redirects the Christian away from the gods of this present age back to a vital life of discipleship.

The author sets about his task by drawing out some of the key issues which ensnare us in activities and habits that are God-denying. His thesis is that 20th-century Christians have 'sold out' to alternative gods, who promise quick fixes and material reward. In this regard, his third chapter, which details some of these idols, is particularly helpful. They include the role of television, materialism, sport, the career-driven, and even those whose families become their idols. All this is done in a way which is balanced and careful.
