There is something strong and secure about Scottish reformed spirituality. Though in the hands of lesser men it can deteriorate into a grim and introverted gloominess, when translated to us through large hearted, clear minded preachers, it can bring light, assurance and fire to our souls as little else can.

Douglas MacMillan, late professor of church history and principles at the Free Church College, Edinburgh, was the very best of the latter class of men.
