ONE WORLD, TWO MINDS
Eastern and Western outlooks in a changing world
By Denis Lane. OMF Books. 64 pages
ISBN 981 3009 71 1

I always thought that what I thought was what I thought! So it is a bit disconcerting to discover that what I think is governed to a large extent by the fact that I was born and brought up in the west. Someone in Asia would approach the same problems from a very different standpoint.

Denis Lane writes from long experience of missionary work in Asia, and is therefore well qualified to comment on the way people think in both the East and the West. In this brief booklet, he charts a little of the history of the way we think. He then goes on to look at a number of practical religious issues. For each area he summarises how someone in the West will generally approach the matter, how someone in the East will come at the same issue, and then examines what the Christian attitude should be. The material is presented clearly and is very practical. I would certainly recommend this booklet to anyone who comes into contact with people from the East, whether that be by visiting countries like Japan, China or Singapore or by meeting Asians in Britain. It will help greatly to overcome much confusion and misunderstanding.
