This is an abridged version of a book first published in 1861 and is intended for both private and group use. John Angell James was a Congregational minister in Birmingham from 1805 to 1859 and wrote a number of books for his own congregation and group of churches.
The chapters look at the Christian church; fellowship; membership; the duties of church members; the duties of church members to their pastor and to other members, and to those of other churches. At the end, there are helpful comments on subjects such as the conduct of church meetings; church discipline; electing a pastor; and the prayer meeting.
