New West Coast initiative in Scotland takes off

John MacKinnon

Following a mini tour of different geographical areas in Scotland by Nick McQuaker, the Gospel Partnership Development Officer, in May 2022, it’s great to report the establishment of the recently formed West Coast Gospel Partnership.

It was initially the vision of six churches and four church leaders in Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and has a huge potential for growth.

New Scottish partnerships?

One of the fruits of the ongoing Life22 mission initiative of A Passion for Life has been the initiation of some promising conversations around Scotland about the possibility of the establishment or in some cases re-establishment of Regional Gospel Partnerships (RGPs).

Nick McQuaker, the development officer for the partnerships, has been on a tour around Scotland meeting key church leaders in Edinburgh, Fife, Aberdeen, Moray, and Ayrshire.

The Free Church of Scotland have recently released a video and booklet promoting their aim to see a healthy gospel church for every community in Scotland:

Healthy in ministry; healthy in mission; healthy in training; and healthy, growing gospel congregations that are a blessing to the community around them. David Meredith, the Mission Director of the Free Church of Scotland, said: ‘The key to developing a healthy gospel church is to be rooted in two things – rooted in the world of the Bible and its proclamation, while building a bridge into contemporary society. The sweet spot of being faithful to Christ and the Bible, and engaging with our own society.’

Normality hits the road

The Glorious Normal was the title of the FIEC’s five one-day conferences in Cardiff, Birmingham, London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh was the venue for the Scottish gathering of around 120 people, representing more than 30 churches, and in his welcome remarks their pastor, Paul Rees, set the tone for the day with encouraging accounts of new believers during ministry in lockdown.

One of life’s most enjoyable experiences and one that spans the globe in its cultural relevance is the joy of sharing a meal amongst family, friends or even on occasions with complete strangers.

In the journey of life, I’ve known the simplicity of an apple given at great sacrifice in a poverty-stricken African village, the elaborate feasts of civil gatherings, the splendour of wedding celebrations, the countless choices of restaurant menus and, my favourite, the gathering round the family table for home-cooked fayre where the main ingredient is love.

We have all heard the phrase ‘build back better’ many times in recent days as everyone seeks to establish what a new normal will look like.

For the church of our Lord Jesus Christ the pandemic has given all of us an opportunity to review much of our activity and to ask serious questions, as we emerge from the various restrictions, as to how we can recalibrate and refocus on the centrality of the good news of the gospel.

Glasgow servants of Word ponder faith, love and pain

It was wonderful to gather in-person at the Tron Church in Glasgow for the ‘Servants of the Word’ annual conference hosted by Cornhill Scotland.

Seasoned ministers (many displaying the signs of exhaustion from having navigated the occasionally membership-divisive waters of the pandemic-imposed restrictions) and an array of young ministers and those in training; joined together for a feast of refreshment, encouragement, and practical exhortation.
