As we prepare to re-open our churches Ann Benton gives us some thoughts about making the Sabbath a delight for the whole family

Recently reading Anthony Trollope’s Barchester Towers I was reminded again about how the fourth commandment and its observance has come into such bad repute. In that book, remembering the Sabbath Day is a cause passionately espoused by the hypocritical (what else?) evangelical chaplain, Mr Slope. The cause is also championed by the bishop’s wife with a kind of malicious fervour which is the very antithesis of the joy and liberty it was supposed to proclaim when first given to Moses on the mount.

Ann Benton explains why a Christian sub-culture at home is vital

When my sisters and I were children, one of the storybooks we had in our comparatively small collection at home was a clothbound book, published in 1946 with attractive coloured pictures. It was The Children of Happy House by Enid Blyton.

Approximately 250 women gathered on Saturday 13 May at St Mary’s Church, Basingstoke for the South-Central Women’s Day – a biennial event.

Under the title The Heart of the Matter, the women heard some excellent teaching from Lizzie Smallwood on the letter of James. There were two talks, one concerning ‘diagnosis’, considering a series of tests which James gives, and the other on ‘treatment’, which is the path of wisdom through repentance and the grace of God.

Why read Dickens?

Ann Benton

In a day when relativism, individualism and the love of money are prevalent, it is interesting that the media should be engaged in re-examining and generally celebrating the works of a man who wrote so extensively and scathingly about such issues.

Charles Dickens, while universally admired, is not universally loved. His books are long, his plots thick, his denouements incredible, his descriptions very wordy and some modern readers lose the will to turn the page. But for comedy — his books contain some of the funniest scenes ever written — and for pathos, characterisation, dialogue and powerful storytelling, Dickens is matchless and his books well worth the effort. If this is to be a year when Dickens writings will be under general discussion, believers should not miss out. Dickens’s fiction is packed with truth and with large and serious themes.

Women have always played a vital part in evangelical churches.

They have been the faithful attenders, the godly raisers of children, the pinafored polishers of church steps or brasses, the diligent Sunday School teachers, the dogged prayer warriors and the humble suppliers of practical needs.

Raising manly boys and feminine girls?

Ann Benton

Is it a boy or a girl? This is the first question that is asked on the birth of a new baby.

On the basis of gender, not merely the name but also the wallpaper and the clothing is selected. The parent is already in the brave new minefield of gender identity. Some distinctions, while cultural and arbitrary, are benign. It would be a very mean feminist who would send her son to school in a dress.
