Why do some US  evangelicals still  support Donald  Trump?

How strong is evangelical support for Donald Trump now? How has his recent bout of Covid affected that perception? And watching from outside the US, how is it possible Bible believing Christians can back such an extraordinary figure?

In 2016 Trump attracted the support of 81% of US (mostly white) evangelicals. In addition, between May 2019 and March 2020, the New York Times reported that the number of weekly church-attending white Protestants (a wider group than ‘evangelicals’) convinced that Donald Trump was ‘anointed by God to be president’ grew from 29.6% to 49.5%.
