In 2016 Trump attracted the support of 81% of US (mostly white) evangelicals. In addition, between May 2019 and March 2020, the New York Times reported that the number of weekly church-attending white Protestants (a wider group than ‘evangelicals’) convinced that Donald Trump was ‘anointed by God to be president’ grew from 29.6% to 49.5%.
