Earlier in the year, John Benton interviewed Professor John Lennox, especially with his recent book Can Science Explain Everything? in mind. Here is the second part of that conversation...
John Benton: In the book you go in the direction of the Big Bang when it comes to origins. Most people’s view of the Big Bang sees matter and space itself suddenly emerging and expanding. But what happens to time? Is there an expansion somehow of time?
John Lennox: I have no idea what time is. I think one of the huge difficulties here is the lack of honesty about our ignorance. We don’t know what time is. Actually we don’t know what energy is either. I mentioned in the book that in science we use concepts, even concepts we cannot explain completely. The classic example is gravity. Newton’s equations describe how gravity works, but they do not explain what it is.
