The man who remade Scotland

John Knox, painted by Matt Abraxas. From a new biography of Knox for children by Simonetta Carr, (Reformation Heritage Books, ISBN 978 1 601 782 892)

As Scotland moves towards its referendum on staying in the United Kingdom, Don Stephens gives a snapshot of the life of John Knox

In the 1500s there was no United Kingdom.

There was England, there was Scotland and there was Wales. And they hated each other deeply. The border between England and Scotland was criss-crossed by warring parties and armies and the greatest ally of Scotland was France. What stopped the wars was that Scotland became a Protestant country. The alliance with France was broken. And behind all this was one man who set things in motion. That man was John Knox (1514 –1572).
