Take a portion of art, add a splattering of discipleship and a healthy dose of Bible teaching and what do you get? For the last eight years UCCF: The Christian Unions has been working on its recipe for mentoring art students and has seen many answers to prayer as God equips young artists to live for Christ in the creative arts and media industries.
The Scottish Interface conference is now in its third year. In Glasgow last month about 60 students, recent art school graduates and those now established professionally in the arts met to discuss, network, receive advice and encouragement from established artists and consider how the Bible speaks with relevance into the language and life of artists today.
Ally Gordon, UCCF’s Interface Arts Co-ordinator, spoke on ‘How does art function in the kingdom of God?’ Other guest speakers included: graphic design tutor Colin Black, professional photographer Kieran Dodds, singer/songwriter Jo Mango, who also played live on the opening night, and BAFTA and Emmy award winning film-maker Norman Stone, who showcased various clips from his films and answered questions about being a Christian and a professional in the film industry. There was also stand-up comedy from Dan Curtis and a visit to Glasgow’s Tramway Gallery to discuss the current exhibition.
