His great aunt is a saint of the Russian Orthodox church, he was worshipped as a god by a small tribe on the island of Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean, and for the past 74 years was married to the head of the Church of England.
Born in Greece and baptised as a baby into the Greek Orthodox Church, Prince Philip, who died on 9 April 2021, had a more unusual experience of religion than many royals. While constantly in the public eye until his retirement in 2017 age 96, his personal life, opinions and beliefs were largely shielded from view due both to the Queen’s pre-eminence and the importance attached to the Royal family staying out of matters of division and controversy. This was perhaps best emblemised by his silent membership of the House of Lords for more than 50 years until the changes to hereditary peerages in 1999.
