This little book is part of a series of books intended to be used as studies for young teens, or for teen reading.
This volume is geared to girls, indicated by the sub-title ‘Just Like You’. It deals with the brief lives and deaths of 21 Christian women under three headings: the early church, the Reformation, the covenanters and modern missionaries and Christians.
The writer seeks to show the vital faith of these women and that for the most part they were very ordinary people who were persecuted and often died because of their love for Jesus Christ. At the end of each section there are some suggestions of things to do and find out about, often with Bible references to understand vocabulary used. Then, at the conclusion of the book, the writer focuses in on present-day Christians who face persecution, and also the uncertainty of anyone’s future.
I would have liked the character sketches to have more depth, so that the reader could really empathise with these young women, but found that each chapter was far too short to become real, which is a pity because the idea is good, but might have been more successful with only ten portrayals that really touch the reader. Without this depth, the gory details are very prominent and could be off-putting to a young Christian.
