Grandpa Mike talks about God

From one generation to another

GRANDPA MIKE TALKS ABOUT GOD
By Michael S. Lawson
Christian Focus. 112 pages. £7.99
ISBN 978-1-84550-250-8

How do we teach four to seven-year-olds about the character of God in a way they can understand and enjoy? That’s what this book sets out to do in a creative, interactive way, taking 34 words that describe God and building a chapter around each one.

First, there is a little story to illustrate the point, followed by five sections which expand it and look at Bible verses and application, including something to make or do connected with the theme. The suggestion is for parents and children to work through an ‘attribute’ a week.

Every chapter begins with the statement God is … followed by an adjective. We might balk at some of these — can we really say that God is Colourful? But if we change it to God is a God of Colour, it works very well. Not all of the little stories are helpful — I’m not sure that equating God is Adorable with cute little ducks quite comes off! The most negative aspect of the book is that it is so blatantly American, and so we have references to racoons, Colorado, softball and hummingbirds, while Grandpa Mike is pictured sitting on the porch in his swinging chair.

It is a bit twee at times, but this book is obviously written with a lot of love and it encourages children to look at Scripture and to think about God’s character, and it’s good value for money in a nice, clear A4 format. So until an Anglicised, streetwise version comes out, I’m happy to pass this on to my grandchildren!
