FRESH
Bite-sized inspiration for new students
By Krish Kandiah
IVP. 168 pages. £6.99
ISBN 978-1-84474-275-2

Aimed at students just about to go to university, Fresh is a book of daily biblical thoughts on issues they will face in the student world. The book is designed to be read a chapter a day for the first five weeks of term, and tackles dilemmas that will face many freshers.

As I read through the book I felt it was full of all the things I would want to say to students as they embark on life in halls, on their course, decide what church to go to and whether to get involved in CU. It really is an easy read; the chapters are short, ‘bite-sized’ chunks that only take a few minutes, but provide really helpful and thought provoking, biblical challenges each day.

Tried and tested on a bunch of students, they found some of the weekly challenges a little cheesy. But on a closer read found that ‘each day is a chance for reflection on struggles faced at uni, backed up by the Bible’ (Ruth Lawton 2nd year Midwife University of Hertfordshire).

Krish helpfully starts the book by taking students back to basics and reminding them of key gospel truths they stand for. Then from relationships and managing money to making the most of studies and doing evangelism, Fresh covers a variety of issues students do need to think through, offering not just biblical wisdom, but practical tips for living out Christian lives as students. There is not space to go into real depth with some of these issues, but the reader is always referred to the website (http://www.freshspace.org) full of resources for students, plus a load of recommended further reading.

I thoroughly recommend getting this book into the hands of all first-year students. The price will put many off, so, if you know someone off to university in the next month, buy them a copy as a going-away present!
